What's Your Light Bulb?

rahman

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
- Thomas A. Edison

Light Bulb
The above is the reply Thomas Edison gave when
he was interviewed by a young reporter who
boldly asked Mr. Edison if he felt like
a failure and if he thought he should just
give up by now.

The fact is, it took Thomas Edison thousands of attempts with
different materials to find a filament for an incandescent light-bulb
that would last long enough to make the light-bulb cheap
enough to sell profitably.

Thomas Edison had a goal and despite all his difficulties he
did eventually succeed.

Recently, I was reading an article advising setting no goals:
the best goal is no goal .

The author's belief was that setting goals can lead to failure. He
felt when you don't achieve the goals on the time table you lay
out - you quit.

The problem, I would suggest, is not goals but setting up
specific deadlines to meet your goals.

I doubt Thomas Edison had a deadline for turning the light
bulb into a profitable business. He did, however, have the
goal to succeed.

Goals are essential to directing your life.

I've always had big goals, many of which I've achieved. What
I've skipped is the month by month planning and time tables
to meet those goals.

The latest goal I've been working towards for the past couple
of years is releasing an updated SendFree email marketing
software. I've had tons of set-backs with the project. I've
restarted from the beginning 4 times. And now, finally -
2 years later I am just a few months away from completion!

Stay tuned, as an all new improved SendFree email marketing
software with a great new web site is soon to be released.

If I'd set a time frame on accomplishing the SendFree update,
I certainly would have given up with all my failures. Instead,
I've continued to learn from my failures and push ahead until I
see it through.

I am confident I will fulfill the goal!

Success is about having goals and striving to achieve them.
Stop worrying about how long it takes or the failures you have
along the way. If you stick to your dreams you will make
them a reality!
