Did you send ♥ this Mother's Day?

rahman

I had to smile when I opened my email on Sunday
afternoon.

I noticed right away heart characters in my inbox. Two
retailers perfectly implemented the use of heart characters in
their subject lines to catch recipients' attentions. Using
character's in your subject was a topic I had just covered in
the Friday DEMC E-Magazine issue.

Here's a screen shot of those marketing email messages in
my inbox:

Heart Character in Subject Lines

Note how the first retailer OshKosh uses a heart character in
place of the word love in the subject line. The second
retailer uses the heart character at the start of their subject
line as an attention grabber. Both mailers kept their subject
lines short and concise.

The second subject line from The Children's Place, overall
was more effective as it also gave me a reason to open their
email.

See how The Children's Place used a specific offer and the
word "free" to get me to act on the message's contents.

The Children's Place subject line uses 5 of the key points discussed
in my 10 point subject line check list. You can read it here -
Do Your Subject Lines Pass This Test?

My Sunday email inbox had one other interesting use of
characters worthy of mentioning. One crafty marketer had
a smiley character in his "From" line to make his message
stand out.

Here's a screen shot:

Character in From

As you can see characters are a clever tactic you can use to
gain attention in a crowded inbox. They won't guarantee
your message gets opened, but they do make your brand
stand out.

What ideas do you have for using characters in your
upcoming email campaigns?
