| Geofencing: Using Texting to Attract Customers Posted: 11 May 2012 10:18 AM PDT The Week: The smartphone has become the bane of the retail industry, as savvy customers use physical stores to comparison-shop before going online on their phones to buy the same goods at a cheaper price, a practice known as showrooming. But brick-and-mortar stores are now fighting fire with fire, using smartphones to entice customers into their stores and make an immediate purchase. With the help of a new technology called geofencing, stores are sending texts to nearby customers and engaging with them on a more personal level. Photo by Dmitriy Shironosov/ShutterStock.

| Today in Entrepreneurial History: May 11 Posted: 11 May 2012 09:09 AM PDT On this day in 1929, Jozef Murgaš died. He was a Slovak inventor, architect, botanist, painter, patriot, and Roman Catholic priest. Murgaš was nicknamed the Radio Priest. In 1905, Murgaš achieved radio transmission between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, Pennsylvania, or a distance of 20 miles (30 km). The tone system is the use of two signals of different frequencies, i.e. Murgaš substituted the “dot” of the Morse code with a higher tone and the “dash” with a lower tone (this is the 1904 patent “The way of transmitted messages by wireless telegraphy”). Thomas Edison paid remarkable attention to Murgaš’s experiments and he is said to have informed G. Marconi of Murgaš’s success. Murgaš’s lab in Wilkes-Barre was visited by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905.

| Bullet Time Photo Business Posted: 11 May 2012 07:19 AM PDT Have you ever wondered, what you would do, if you could stop the time and fly? Paulig Brazil — a Finnish coffee brand — built a never before seen set-up, called “Brazil Linko”, to stop the time and see, what people really would do. Brazil Linko uses 38 digital cameras to capture a stunt (jump, kick, summersault, whatever) and instantly create a video of it, utilizing bullet-time technique. The result: a unique video, on which time really appears to stand still. Thirteen years ago, when I first saw this effect in the movie The Matrix, I never imagined that coffee companies would be offering it in a big photo booth in shopping malls! I have no idea what’s required to do this, other some good insurance — did you see some of the “poses” people are making in the video? Someone is going to make a ton of money replicating this in malls around the world. Video below.
