6 Twitter Tips to Improve Email Results

rahman

Earlier this week I read a headline stating that Twitter would
supersede email marketing. I found the statement ironic as
just two day's earlier, Twitter had announced they would
begin delivering a weekly email digest.

Clearly Twitter is not about to replace email marketing.
Twitter even recognizes that email is a great way to keep in
touch with their users, thus their new email digest feature.

What's more, a March 2012 Chief Marketer survey found
78% of US marketing professionals said email is their most
popular marketing tool. Email newsletters were the second
most common marketing tactic with 59% using them.

Email marketing works and works well! Thus the reason so
many marketers use email to reach customers.

Twitter is not about to make email marketing obsolete.
Rather Twitter, when used in combination with email, is an
extremely powerful marketing strategy.

Email and Twitter are a Dynamic Duo!

Let's review 6 Twitter tactics that will improve your email
marketing results.

1) Twitter expands your following.

Twitter allows you to reach out to individuals you do not
know. If you were to email messages to unknown people
you would end up being labeled a spammer.

Using Twitter Search and Twellow you can identify other
Twitter users in your industry. Follow these individuals and
engage them in conversations on Twitter. You'll find many
of the individuals you follow will in turn follow you. The
result is you'll build your following without ever sending an
unsolicited message!

2) Twitter increases your web traffic.

When you have followers on Twitter, you have an audience
base who will share your message with others. The key is to
share content with your followers that they then retweet.

Retweeted messages generate traffic to your site. You can
convert that traffic into email subscribers. Be sure every
page of your web site has an email sign-up form. See the
article - 12 Steps To More Subscribers - on getting
subscribers from your web site.

Use these 4 strategies to get your tweets retweeted:

  • Tweet content with links to interesting information
  • Tweet about Twitter
  • Ask for retweets by including - "Please retweet"
  • Send your tweets during slow weekend times (Friday - Sunday)
3) Twitter improves your search engine position.

In their listing algorithm both Google and Bing consider
how many people share your content. The more often your
content and tweets are shared the more authoritative the
search engines think you are!

Encourage retweets of your tweets. Encourage tweets of
your email. Encourage tweets of your site's content. The
more often your Twitter handle is tweeted the better your
search engine position gets! Your site and your tweets can
gain a good search engine position on your keywords.

Select keywords for your business and include them
regularly in your tweets as well as in your Twitter biography
description. Search engines may display your Twitter
biography information with your links so make sure it's an
attention getting description.

4) Twitter builds your email list.

The individuals who follow you on Twitter often will also
subscribe to your emails. The key is to regularly send a
sign-up offer to your followers. Your sign-up offer should
include the benefits of subscribing to your email list.

In addition, tweet teasers of your email newsletter contents
to encourage people to sign-up for your list. Send out tweets
of an email only promotion you're running and remind
followers they need to be subscribed to your email list to get
the offer.

5) Twitter quickly puts you in front of your audience.

Tweets are short and sweet. The best length for a tweet is
between 120 -130 characters. I don't know about you but
writing 125 characters takes me a lot less time then creating
and sending an entire email.

Not to mention, tweeting a link to an interesting article you
just read is really easy!

Plus Twitter is all about posting frequently! If you were to
send as many emails to your subscribers as is recommended
when sending tweets, you would be banned from inboxes.

The life of a link on Twitter is about 3 hours. Set up 15 - 25
tweets to go out in a day and you easily stay in front of your
audience. You can use tools like Roost or Buffer
to schedule and track your tweets. Track your tweets for
responses and share your best tweets in your email
newsletter.

6) Twitter gets you feedback.

Twitter let's you interact with your followers so you can find
out what they're interested in learning more about. You can
ask for and immediately receive feedback about content,
subject lines, products / services, etc.

Use Twitter to research and develop content for your email
newsletter. Answer followers questions and share those
conversations in your emails as well.

You can also host a Twitter chat to do further market
research or to engage your subscribers in your brand. See

Your Ultimate Guide

Twitter is a terrific tool to expand the reach of your email
marketing messages, develop your email content and build
your email list! Use these 6 Twitter strategies to improve
your email marketing and you'll see the difference.
