Days of Despair for Many Suffering Central Java Drought
Every day, the residents of Gendayakan subdistrict in Central Java patiently wait next to their barren, dusty fields for their supply of drinking water to arrive by truck. In Lanjaran village, the only water residents have access to is deep in a cave high up on the slopes of Mount Merapi. Such scenes are increasingly common across drought prone Central Java, but residents say they have never weathered a dry spell like this, which has decimated the agrarian economy.
